Ibn Qayyim was the foremost student of (1263–1328). Together, they formed the most influential revivalist movement in late medieval Islam. Imprisoned multiple times for their rejection of popular saint-cults and philosophical theology ( kalām ), Ibn Qayyim wrote over 60 works.

Ibn Qayyim was born in 691 AH (1291 CE) in Damascus, Syria, to a family of scholars and nobles. His father, Qayyim al-Jawziyah, was a respected Islamic judge and scholar. From a young age, Ibn Qayyim demonstrated a keen intellect and a passion for learning. He studied under some of the most prominent scholars of his time, including Ibn Taymiyyah, a leading figure in Islamic theology.
