The game follows the story of Naegi Makoto, a cheerful and optimistic student who is enrolled in Hope's Peak Academy, a prestigious high school in Japan. The academy is known for accepting students with exceptional talents, and Naegi is excited to join the student body. However, upon arrival, he finds himself and 14 other students trapped in the school by a sadistic bear robot named Monokuma.

The gameplay in Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc - HI2U is divided into three main parts: Daily Life, Investigation, and Trial. During Daily Life, players interact with other students, build relationships, and gather information. The Investigation phase involves exploring the school and gathering evidence to help solve murder cases.
