The story begins when a meteorite hits Haripuram. The local king uses its rare metal to craft a divine lamp with healing powers. Kunjikelu, a brave warrior, saves a prince from invaders and asks for the lamp as his reward to build a temple that would be open to all castes. However, he dies of smallpox before he can see his vision through.
