If you load up Alpha 1.2.6 today, the first thing you’ll notice is the terrain. This was the era of the "Alpha Terrain Generator." Before the terrain was smoothed out in Beta 1.8, Minecraft was wild.

This was the golden age of the trope. Mobs were relentless. The pathfinding was simpler, but the darkness made them terrifying. There were no shields, no iron golems to protect villages (villagers didn't even exist yet), and no sprinting.
