This is where NALCO 3688 acts as a decisive agent. As a high-molecular-weight anionic polyacrylamide, its function is to accelerate solid-liquid separation through a process called flocculation. When added to the slurry, the long polymer chains of NALCO 3688 adsorb onto the surfaces of fine red mud particles. Because the polymer is anionic (negatively charged), it bridges between particles, neutralizing their mutual electrostatic repulsion and binding them into large, porous aggregates called flocs. These flocs settle rapidly under gravity, forming a dense, compact layer at the bottom of a settling tank or washer.
